mallaig to Oban, a summer passage Voyage
Mallaig to Oban (7 Nights)
Dates: 17 - 24 August 2026
£1810.00 per person sharing twin cabin
Each summer we move our base from Oban to Mallaig for a few weeks. This gives us access to some amazing waters that are just a little too far from Oban.
This means we have two voyages that start and end in different places. We call these “passage-trips” and they offer a brilliant opportunity to explore a really big sea area. On this trip we could end up exploring anywhere from Skye to Jura with detours galore.
The train network makes the logistics super easy…. More info at the bottom of the page

This trip starts in Mallaig, a great wee fishing village. We’ll pull out of the harbour and then….. it gets difficult. There are so many choices. With seven days to play with we might do a quick circumnavigation of Skye. We will very likely have a look at the Small Isles. Crossing the Minch to go walking on the sandy beaches of Barra is perfectly doable.
At some time on the voyage we’ll swoop past Ardnamurchan point with its magnificent lighthouse to guide us.
Then we’ll have to figure out which way to go round Mull. Down the sound or round the south side. This is a great option because it means going past Staffa with it’s combined appeal of Puffins and Fingals cave.
Iona, the charming wee island off the south west corner of Mull is another great stop over, as are the unbelievably pretty beaches on the south coast.
Further on we could call at Colonsay. It’s another beautiful Island with a real feeling of being away from it all. We had a very remarkable wildlife encounter just north of here. It was dark but we heard the unmistakable sound of breathing as dolphins broke the surface nearby. We went forward to the bow and looked into the dark water to see the shapes of dolphins brightly lit with phosphorescence. It was magic and to make it even better we could hear their clicking chatter through the hull as we all swam along together. One of those unrecordable, unphotographable but unforgettable moments.
Mallaig to Oban by sea is about 50 miles. We’ll be doing many more than that, both by sea and in our explorations on shore. Taking it nice and slow.
Travel. The train line from Glasgow splits at a town Called Crianlarich. So its really easy to get between Glasgow and Mallaig then back again from Oban to Glasgow. Or if your driving, leave the car in Crianlarich and get the train to Mallaig then at the end of the trip just hop on the train at Oban for the short hop back to the car. Our starting and finishing times tie in pretty well with the train timetable too.
