On the 1 July 2024 Provident will be sailing from Mallaig on a hillwalking adventure amongst the remote peninsulas and islands of the west coast of Scotland.  With Abacus Mountain guides we will climb hills by day and sail into the evening making sure we get the most out of the land and the sea.    Whatever the weather we can promise you a great adventure!

All adventure activities carry an element of risk and by choosing to do an activity you (or your parent/carer) accept this risk. You may get wet and cold, you may slip, trip and stumble. Minor cuts and bruises are not uncommon, sprains and twists occur occasionally and there is the chance of more serious injury. You will also be out in the changeable Scottish weather.

Find some breathing space, escape everyday stress and feel the restorative effect of nature. Tap in to our knowledge of the mountains and benefit from the extra security of being with a qualified and experienced guide.

We believe that spending time in our beautiful mountains, immersed in nature, challenging yourself physically and mentally, is fundamentally good for us all. Let us help you restore some balance and give you some inspiration.
— Mike Pescod, Abacus Mountain Guide,
On Provident our itinerary is a collaboration with nature. We think that not knowing precisely where we are going or when we will get there is the essence of adventure. By being adaptable we put ourselves in the best place to find the best place. It may be a fantastic sailing experience, a beautiful anchorage, a remote Munro or an encounter with amazing sea life.
— Steve, Provident Skipper and Owner

This is an ideal trip if you..

are an experienced hill walker who wants a new challenge

are generally a solo walker who would like some company on the hill

are happy to have the support of a group leader - a professional mountain guide

are excited about being on a classic sailing ship - no experience necessary just a willingness to have a go!

like the idea of approaching the mountains from the sea.

have your own hillwalking gear

are fit enough to spend a whole day in the mountains - from a boat you always start at sea level!

like a bit of comfort and a decent meal at the end of a long day.

like to celebrate a successful day with whisky and cake - not necessarily in that order.

Guests, on top of Sgurr Coire Choinnichean, Loch Nevis, Inverie and Provident below.

Sailing boats are perfect for adventuring in comfort –you can always have a warm dry bed and great food even when it is cold and wet outside.
— Morag, cook, crew and owner

Leaving from Mallaig we have these hills in our sights…

Each day the skipper and the guide will make a plan on the next day’s mountain and the best way to get there. Provident is a sailing boat and we try not to use the engine. Ultimately the weather, the winds and the tides will make our choices for us. Possible mountains listed here. Let us know if there is one you definitely don’t want to miss.
