Help Keep Provident Sailing for Another Century

Provident has proudly sailed for over 101 years – and with care, passion, and a little help, she’ll continue her adventures well into the next.

Like all traditional vessels, Provident requires ongoing care. From scraping, painting, oiling and scrubbing, to sail repairs and system upgrades – maintenance is constant. Throughout the sailing season we keep her running beautifully, and during winter she undergoes more intensive work to stay strong and seaworthy.

Thanks to our amazing charter guests, the day-to-day upkeep continues. But now, after more than a century of life at sea, Provident needs an extra level of support – deeper, specialist conservation work that protects her structure for future generations.

These tasks aren’t glamorous. They’re labour-intensive, time-consuming, and often costly. But by tackling them now, we can slow the effects of time and delay the need for major structural rebuilds far into the future.

important THInGS THAT WE NEED TO LOOK AFTER…

  • This will keep damaging rain water out. We have made a start on this but need to carry on and at some point some stanchions will need to be replaced.

  • This will be important to ensure that no rotten ends get into the structure of the boat.

  • This could range from a small repair (in 2024 we repaired a crack in the main gaff) but it could be any thousands of pounds to replace one of the spars.

  • The mast step shows some signs of deterioration. The deck leak that may had been causing some damage was repaired in 2024 but it will be important to monitor for ongoing signs of wear.

  • When we took PROVI on, we completely stripped back the hull. There are planks from a variety of timbers including around 20% of the planking which is elm, this is the type of timber originally used. We would like to hold onto these as long as we can but in the end they will need to be replaced.

  • This needs to be constantly monitored and worn parts repaired and replaced.

  • These are constantly under review and will be renewed as required.
