10 A PASSAGE TO MALLAIG:
Villages, remote islands
and wonderful wildlife.
Every July, Provident makes her seasonal passage north from Craobh Haven to Mallaig — and this one-way voyage is a genuine adventure in its own right, not simply a means of getting from A to B.
Sailing across a wide and glorious expanse of Scotland's west coast, we have the freedom to roam — weaving through sea lochs, calling at remote island villages and seeking out the extraordinary wildlife that makes this stretch of coastline one of the most rewarding in Europe. Seals, eagles, dolphins and seabirds are all regular companions on this journey north.
Beginning at our home port of Craobh Haven and ending in the atmospheric fishing town of Mallaig — gateway to the Small Isles and Skye — this passage voyage offers a wonderfully varied and unhurried way to experience the very best of the Scottish Highlands and Islands by sea.

From Craobh to Mallaig is around 50 miles as the crow flies but being a sailing boat and, crucially, not being in a hurry we'll probably cover six times that distance to get there. On our way we'll pass Mull,we'll round Ardnamurchan with its Iconic light house towering over the cliffs and explore the Small Isles or maybe stop on the south coast of Skye. We'll almost certainly head into the stunning Loch Nevis and drop anchor on our last night at Inverie where we can go ashore and celebrate our arrival at the Old Forge, mainland Britain's remotest pub.
Most of our trips start and end at the same place. This one is a little different because it starts in Craobh Haven and ends in the small fishing port of Mallaig. We call this a passage. The exact route we take and the stops we make will depend partly on the winds and partly on what we feel like doing. Our journey past Mull maybe to the north via the sound of Mull. This could include a stop at the pretty little town of Tobermory or perhaps a visit to our friends at Nc'Nean. This is a great little independent distillery situated in a spot that would normally take ages to get to (unless you happen to be travelling by boat). Alternatively we may head west, stopping at Iona, Staffa and Lunga for a taste of some amazing history, geology and wildlife. Further North we'll encounter the Small isles and we're sure to make a stop either at Eigg, Muck, Rum or Canna. Each of these islands has its own unique character. As we approach Mallaig we may get the chance to stop at Lock Scavaig on Skye. This south facing bay is surrounded by extraordinary mountains, towering like giant fangs into the sky. These geological features have a habit of funnelling wind downwards so it can be a pretty dramatic place but in calm weather we can get ashore here which offers the very special treat of a walk around Loch Coruisk. This body of fresh water is a truly unique spot. Over shadowed by the hills and strewn with enormous whale like rocks sculpted by countless millenia. Being a passage, this trip has some logistical considerations, all of which are very easy to overcome let us know if you need any information about this.
