16 Coll & Tiree Sailing
Holiday Sunshine, Deserted
Beaches & Atlantic Light
Coll and Tiree are unlike any other islands in the Hebrides. Low-lying and open to the sky, their flat terrain allows Atlantic weather to pass clean overhead — creating a remarkable microclimate that gives them some of the highest sunshine hours anywhere in Britain.
At this time of year there are fourteen hours of daylight, and the evenings are long, golden and gloriously unhurried. It is, quite simply, the perfect time to be at sea in the west of Scotland.
Sailing from Craobh Haven, we'll make our way past the beautiful islands of Colonsay and Mull before reaching these sun-kissed, low-lying wonders — where sweeping white sand beaches stretch out in every direction, the Atlantic rolls in from thousands of miles away, and you may well have the shore entirely to yourself.

The journey to Col and Tiree will take us past Colonsay and the Ross of Mull. We'll no doubt make a few stops on the way. Maybe at Iona to explore its ancient history or perhaps Staffa where we can get inside Fingal's cave one of the most extraordinary geological oddities to be found anywhere. On Tiree and Coll we can go ashore. We'll most likely anchor on the east but these slender islands can be crossed easily on foot.
Known for their sunny weather and beautiful beaches Col and Tiree are a great destination at this time of year. Like many of the Islands we visit, Tiree is rich in ancient History. From a sheltered anchorage at Gott bay we can walk a short way across the island to see a Broch at Vaul. This circular stone structure was constructed nearly two thousand years ago as a shelter for the ancient islanders. Just along the coast is the Ringing Stone. A giant boulder that rings when bashed by a stone. The really amazing thing is that it's covered with indentations, slowly carved into the rock by thousands of bashes, thousands of rings over thousands of years. As we sail there and back we will have our usual mix of getting involved with working the boat, taking the helm, generally fiddling with sails and string. There will also be plenty of time to just relax, admire the view, spot all sorts of wildlife and enjoy great food and good company. It would be unthinkable for us not to run into pods of dolphins. These playful and amazingly powerful swimmers love to come and say hello. They often spend an hour or so swooping around or bow as we sail along. Our route could well take in Staffa for a stop at Fingal's cave to be amazed by it's crazy geology or a stop at Iona for a stroll around the abbey.
