THE ARRIVAL SUMMER, Island hopping, sailing and wildlife.

With this seven night trip we’ll get a great blend of sailing and exploring on shore. We’ll set sail for the Inner Hebrides, heading for Lunga and the Treshnish Islands, Staffa and (weather permitting) Muck and Canna (or both!).  All these islands are home to puffin colonies. By now the next generation of pufflings will be hatching and their parents will be busy gathering sand eels for their families.

Equally amazing are nesting pairs of shags.  Typically these striking birds nest under rocks taking turns to tend the eggs while the other goes hunting or stands guard.

Lunga is also home to nesting razorbills.  It’s amazing to get up close to these sleek hunters with  striking white stripes on their faces like a kind of war paint.

By June the days are getting really long with daylight long into the evening so we can often enjoy dinner on deck.

As well as wildlife watching we’ll have our usual Provident style blend of action and relaxation. Sailing, with everyone getting involved with sail handing and steering.  Great food and great company.  Relaxing and watching the world drift by.  Exploring on shore and plenty of tea and cakes.

Built in 1924, Provident is a lovingly restored Brixham sailing trawler, known for her classic lines, sturdy build, and timeless elegance. With her rich maritime history and traditional rigging, she provides a unique and authentic sailing experience. The crew will invite you to lend a hand with the sails, or you can simply relax on deck, breathing in the crisp sea air as you glide through the waters of the west coast, past unspoiled islands and dramatic coastal cliffs.

May is the perfect time for seabird enthusiasts, as many species are in the midst of their breeding season. From the deck of Provident, you’ll have prime viewing opportunities to spot puffins, guillemots, razorbills, and perhaps even the majestic white-tailed eagle soaring overhead. The rocky shores and remote sea stacks serve as bustling colonies for kittiwakes and shags, while gannets can be seen plunging into the sea in spectacular fashion. With luck, you might also encounter seals, porpoises, or dolphins accompanying the boat.

Each evening, you’ll anchor in a secluded bay or near a remote island, where you can enjoy hearty, locally-sourced meals and share stories with fellow travellers. With minimal light pollution, the night skies over the Hebrides are often spectacular, offering a chance to stargaze from the deck.

Whether you’re a seasoned sailor, a keen birdwatcher, or simply someone seeking a tranquil escape, this voyage aboard Provident promises a perfect blend of adventure, wildlife, and relaxation along Scotland’s breathtaking coastline.
