Chasing a northern summer? Sail the Scottish islands on a wooden boat from 1924.

Provident is a 1924 Brixham trawler. You’ll help haul her sails by hand while a crew teaches you how. No sailing experience needed, and nobody’s in a hurry.

FIND YOUR TRIP

One boat, a few different kinds of vacation

Remote islands, island whisky, wildlife encounters and a century of maritime heritage — twenty voyages aboard a hundred-year-old sailing vessel

Every voyage is small, hands-on and led by a crew who like teaching. Start with the one that sounds most like you.

GETTING HERE FROM AUSTRALIA AND NEW ZEALAND

Make it one leg of a bigger trip

Scotland is a long way from Sydney or Auckland, so it’s worth planning it as part of a longer UK holiday. Our season also runs April to September, which is the northern spring, summer and early autumn.

  1. Choose your voyage first

Pick the week that suits you, then build flights and the rest of your trip around it. The ten-night Midsummer Adventure (12–22 June) is the one that makes the long journey feel worthwhile.

  2. Get your UK ETA

Australian and New Zealand citizens usually need an Electronic Travel Authorisation to visit the UK. Apply online through the official gov.uk ETA page before you travel, and check the current rules for your passport.

  3. Fly to Glasgow or Edinburgh

Both are the usual gateways to Scotland’s west coast. Voyages depart from Craobh Haven or Mallaig, and the crew will help you plan the last leg from the airport.

Our tip: Give yourself a couple of nights in Glasgow or Edinburgh before you board. You’ll step aboard far more rested once the jet lag has worn off.

THE BEST VACATION TO EXPLORE

THE SCOTTISH COAST

BEFORE YOU BOOK

Do I need sailing experience?

No. Provident's voyages are open to complete beginners, and the crew teach you each job as you go. If you want a gentle start, choose our Learning the Ropes trip.

Will I actually have to work the boat?

You'll be invited to. Sails are hauled by hand, and joining in is a big part of the vacation. The crew explain everything, and you can step back whenever you like.

Can I come on my own?

Yes. Solo travelers are a big part of our guests, and small groups make it easy to get to know everyone. See our solo sailing page for details.

What about dietary needs?

Our private chef caters for all dietary requirements. Let us know when you book, and the menu is built around you.

What do I need to enter the UK?Can we charter the whole boat?

Yes. Provident is available for private charter, so a family, group of friends or team can have her to themselves. Email the crew to talk dates.

Ready to slow down?

Check the 2027 dates, or write to the crew with your questions. We reply from Scotland, so allow a little for the time difference.
